PROTOTYPES

Quadruple-based MS system

We have focused upon the well-known, compact quadruple mass spectrometers to learn the best system designs for field applications.  We now have experience with a combined shallow-water and air sampling MS and with a full-ocean depth (6,000 m) quadruple MS system, called DOMS (Deep Ocean Mass Spectrometer) that can monitor seafloor sites for months on battery power or even longer periods on cabled power.  Seafloor monitoring targets have included cold seeps on the continental margin, hydrothermal vents, and chemical waste sites (planned for 2007+).  We have also tested a volcanic vent MS monitor on Kilauea in collaboration with USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and the US National Parks Service.
